An Active Landfill Site Management – Demonstration Project

The paper presents the scope and the progress of the LIFE environment demonstration project “The Sustainable Rehabilitation of Landfill Site” (LIFE 03 ENV/SL/000557- LIMNOTOP) which is taking place at the municipal solid waste landfill site Ormoz, Slovenia.

The paper gives a short overview and comparison of different approaches to landfill management and aftercare techniques which range from permanent storage and containment techniques to process-based approaches. Three major points of the landfill site rehabilitation are presented: the reconstruction of the landfill bottom with leachate collecting system and its treatment on the constructed wetland, final cover of the closed landfill with the woodland establishment and an irrigation system for treated leachate reuse. At the end the monitoring program used to obtain the required experimental data is outlined.
