Pig slurry depuration system

The hod breeding sector in our country estimates the annual production of pig slurry around 25 million of TM. This huge development makes necessary a study of the environment impact of this compound.

The research was conducted at the National Institute for Agricultural Research in Madrid. The objective was the evaluating of a pig slurry depuration system using an initial conventional physical-chemical treatment and mixed aerobicanaerobic biological integrated in a unique process treatment. Contamination parameters were evaluated in Winter and Spring and an economic study for each treatment carried out. Preliminary results show that process would be a good alternative for treating these wastes. The physical-chemical treatment gets a higher reduction on Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Total Solids (TS). Notwithstanding this, the biological treatment gets a higher reduction on ammonium nitrogen (NH+ 4-N) and nitrogen Kjeldahl (NK).
