Perspectives for Membrane Technology – Treatment Facilities in Wastewater Technology – Application in Decentralised Wastewater Treatment

The membrane activation process will become during the next decades the most innovative and the most desirable step in the treatment of domestic and municipal waste water.

For several decades membrane plants are used in water technology and in most different industrial production processes for material separation. The utilisation of membrane plants in water technology started with the treatment of sea- and backwater. Later on membrane plants were also used to treat industrial waste water and landfill leachate. During the last years appropriate plants have been more and more applied for drinking water production from surface water and for municipal waste water treatment. Since membrane plants in industry have to fulfil most different tasks, the complete range of membrane processes is found in this field. With the help of microfiltration and ultrafiltration it is possible to keep back all particles, bacteria, and even viruses. Nanofiltration and reverse osmosis even allow to keep back dissolved substances. For this purpose, however, the pressure must be very high, which causes high energy costs. In municipal waste water treatment the application of membrane technology is limited up to now to microfiltration and ultrafiltration plants which are operated at low pressure.
