WTERT Germany in the Baltic States

On behalf of the German-Baltic Chamber of Commerce in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania e.V. and financed by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment WtERT Germany was to prepare a strategy paper for sustainable waste management in the Baltics and organize a workshop with clear recommendations and impulses.

WtERT Germany

Due to the EU Waste Framework Directive, the Baltic States are confronted with the priority demand to increase recycling rates. The needs of assessment of the German-Baltic Chamber of Commerce in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania (AHK), elaborates the background information in detail and consistently places the thematic focus of the project "on the prevention, reuse and recycling of waste [...] as all three countries have considerable gaps in this area."

The task of this strategy paper is to promote the exchange of knowledge between the Baltic States and Germany as well as to bring about the networking of local stakeholders with experts of recognized practice. This strategy paper is committed to the overall goal of the export initiative to "strengthen sustainable (environmental) infrastructure and make a real contribution to sustainable development and better living conditions" in capacity building in the Baltic countries.

In the course of the WtERT Strategy Paper Baltic the initial focus on recycling will be intentionally supplemented and reassessed with regard to prioritization of energy recovery in terms of time of implementation.

In front of a group of interested participants from Lithuania, Latvia and Lithuania (ministries, municipalities and companies), the workshop took place on April 28, 2022 in Riga with the participation of the companies and experts from Germany.
