"No batteries in the garbage can!"

The “Brennpunkt: Batterie” campaign is an initiative of the members of the BDE

Batteries are everywhere, they provide the needed energy for modern everyday life. Disposing of them has to be taken with caution as they can turn flammable.

"The material damage caused by incorrectly disposed batteries and accumulators is already serious and potentially life-threatening for employees in the waste management industry. Nationwide, there are up to thirty fires a day in recycling and sorting facilities, at depots or in waste collection vehicles. Fires have become a real plague on the waste disposal industry in Germany."

The "Brennpunkt: Batterie” campaign is an initiative of the members of the Federal Association of German Waste Management or Bundesverband der Deutschen Entsorgungs (BDE). The campaign has two aims: provide information on the correct disposal of batteries and rechargeable batteries and raise awareness of the consequences of incorrect disposal.

The "Brennpunkt: Batterie” German campaign includes a nationwide sticker campaign. The aim is to equip as many waste garbage cans as possible with warning stickers to stop incorrect disposal and draw attention to the correct disposal of batteries.

BDE has put together a working group around battery fires and insurance cover. Many affected companies have joined to develop solutions for fire prevention and protection, to raise awareness and guarantee current and future insurance cover.

In addition to the campaign, BDE website provides a guide which explains legal bases for the disposal of waste containing lithium batteries and cells. BDW want o use this guide to provide information and eliminate current uncertainties in the industry.
