Cologne Plans to Introduce a Packaging Tax

The packaging tax is based on the model existing in the city of Tübingen. Although a motion has been initially passed by majority of the city council, it has yet to be decided from when will it be enforced and how high will the tax be. The tax would make disposable packaging more expensive than reusable packaging. Once all is set Cologne will be the first city in Germany with over a million inhabitants to impose a tax in single use packaging for to-go consumption.

 

Any place that offers take-away food or drinks, including drive-in services, will need to pay a tax to the city corresponding to their disposable packaging. For now it was proposed that each coffee to-go- cup would incur a 50 cent fee and for disposable cuttlery 20 cents. Initially the tax will be payed by the businesses, but later on the costs could be transfered to customers.
