Global WtERT and Sharjah University deliver letter to COP28 President on methane emissions from waste

We were proudly represented by Dr. Mohamed Abdallah, WtERT United Arab Emirates and M.Sc. Yuri Schmitke A. B. Tisi, WtERT Brasil. WtERT contributed to COP28 by sharing its recent studies regarding methane emissions from landfills using satellites and advice on the importance of diverting waste from landfills and stressing the important role of academia to fight misinformation and advance research with key data on WtE.

Today (06/12), Abren's Executive President and Vice President of the Global WtERT, Yuri Schmitke, delivered a letter signed by Global WtERT and Sharjah University to the President Designate of COP28, His Excellency Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber. The letter was received by his secretary in the presidential office.
The letter warns about methane emissions from landfills, which even with the most modern biogas capture systems, leak 50 to 70% of the methane, according to NASA satellite images.
In Brazil, emissions are 3 to 10 times higher than landfill declarations in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The results show that waste admissions are on a par with the entire agricultural sector, at around 45% each.
The solution to this problem is to divert waste from landfills, following the waste hierarchy: reuse, recycle, and carry out thermal treatment (waste to energy) and biological treatment (composting). These practices lead to a 8.4-fold reduction in greenhouse gases, according to a study by the UK's Brazil Energy Program - BEP (UK, 2022).
